Is time for elder care?

If you have noticed that your older parents are not keeping up with their house or they have started hoarding, it may be time to consider elder care.  Noticing that your parent’s mental or physical health is declining can be hard on you.  It can also be hard on your finances. If you are feeling overwhelmed by the best way to take care of your parents, below are a few tips to consider:

  • Consider your parent’s needs.  If possible, discuss their current health condition with their physician and what he/she thinks is necessary health care.
  • Research the available benefits.  There are a variety of websites that will assist you with discovering what benefits or discounts your parents may be eligible for.  For example, check out websites like www.benefitscheckup.orgwww.n4a.org and www.eldercare.gov.
  • Consult with an attorney. Timing is critical when it comes to applying for benefits such as Medicaid.  If your parent makes cash gifts or transfers assets within 5 years of applying for Medicaid, it can affect their eligibility.  Thus, it is important to work with an elder law attorney before the aging parent loses the ability to make decisions.
